5-1. 과거완료

과거완료	★★☆
과거완료 시제는 과거의 특정 시점보다 먼저 일어난 일이나 상태를 나타낼 때 쓴다.
When I arrived at the theater, the movie had already begun. I had studied English for three years before I went to England.

 

과거시제 vs. 과거완료 시제	★★★
일어난 순서대로 말하고 있거나, before/after처럼 시간의 전후 관계를 분명히 알려주는 표현과 함께 사용될 때, 단순 과거시제를 사용할 수 있다.
Cathy had often gone fishing before she moved to Seoul. → Cathy often went fishing before she moved to Seoul.

 

 

 

5-2. so that S + V

 

so that...: ~하도록, ~하기 위해서	★☆☆
to 부정사 표현에 주의할 것! : 접속사 that은 주어 + 동사의 문장 형태, to 부정사는 동사원형이 오는 것을 기억하자! so that S + V = in order that S + V so as to 동사원형 = in order to 동사원형 = to 동사원형
I saved some money so that I could buy a car. I saved some money in order that I could buy a car. I saved some money so as to buy a car. I saved some money in order to buy a car. I saved some money to buy a car.

 

so ... that ~ : 너무 ...해서 ~하다	★★☆
so 와 that 사이에 형용사/부사가 올 경우 의미가 다른 구문이 된다.
He was so tired that he couldn't do his homework.

  

6-1. 관계대명사 계속적 용법

 

관계대명사의 계속적 용법	★★☆
쉼표(,)가 없는 한정적 용법과는 달리 관계대명사의 계속적 용법은 선행사의 추가적인 정보나 설명을 제공한다.
I have a sister who is a teacher. 선생님인 여동생이 하나 있다. I have a sister, who is a teacher. 여동생이 하나 있다 / 그리고 그녀는 선생님이다.

 

접속사로 바꾸기	★★☆
해석에 맞게 ‘and, but, for, though 등 + 대명사’로 바꿀 수 있다. *for은 접속사로 ‘~ 때문에(because)의 의미가 있다.
I helped a man, who thanked me for my kindness. = I helped a man, and he thanked me for my kindness.

 

계속적 용법의 예외	★★★
계속적 용법으로는 관계대명사 that, what을 쓸 수 없고, 생략도 불가
I met Tom, who gave me a book. (O) I met Tom, that gave me a book. (X)

 

 

6-2. 형용사 + to부정사

 

to 부정사의 부사적 용법	★☆☆
‘형용사 + to부정사’에서 to 부정사는 앞의 형용사에 대한 판단의 근거, 원인을 설명해준다.
I am happy [to see you]. 행복하다 / 너를 만나서 (행복한 이유를 to부정사가 설명) He must be smart [to understand it]. 그는 똑똑한 게 분명하다 / 그것을 이해하는 것을 보니 (똑똑하다고 생각하는 이유를 to부정사가 설명)

 

to 부정사의 쓰임(용법) 구별하기 - 해석으로 구분하기!	★★★
1. 명사적 용법: ~하는 것, ~하기 2. 형용사적 용법: ~할, ~하는 3. 부사적 용법: ~하기 위해, ~해서 등
 명사(진주어): It is important to study English hard.  형용사: I decided to go to bed early.  부사: I studied hard to pass the exam.
